Wikipedia is a free, web-based, collaborative, multilingual encyclopedia project supported by the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation. Its 18 million articles (over 3.6 million in English) have been written collaboratively by volunteers around the world, and almost all of its articles can be edited by anyone with access to the site.[3] As of May 2011, there were editions of Wikipedia in 281 languages. Wikipedia was launched in 2001 by Jimmy Wales and Larry Sanger[4] and has become the largest and most popular general reference work on the Internet,[2][5][6]ranking around seventh among all websites on Alexa and having 365 million readers.[2][7]

WikiQueer is modeled after Wikipedia and a number of articles begin as imported Wikipedia articles which are then expanded on specifically for queer communities in ways not permitted on Wikipedia. Examples include adding resource information, talking points, donor support information and other non-encyclopedic and more resource hub oriented information. While neither WikiQueer nor The Aequalitas Project have any official connection to Wikipedia or Wikimedia Foundation, they do support the efforts and goals of Wikipedia.

Operation[edit]

Wikimedia Foundation and the Wikimedia chapters[edit]

Wikipedia is hosted and funded by the Wikimedia Foundation, a non-profit organization which also operates Wikipedia-related projects such as Wiktionary and Wikibooks. The Wikimedia chapters, local associations of users and supporters of the Wikimedia projects, also participate in the promotion, the development, and the funding of the project.

Embedding Wikipedia's content in WikiQueer articles[edit]

Main article: Template:Wikipedia transclusion

The Template:WPT allows you to display a Wikipedia article directly within your article.

To display Wikipedia content:

{{WPT|Entry Name}}

For example, to display the entry on Harvey Milk:

{{WPT|Harvey Milk}}
