By default, the template is set to "expanded" if there is no other template in the article, otherwise "unexpanded" if there is. To change this for a specific article, use: Note to editors on how to manage collapsibility:
- Use {{LGBT|state=collapsed}} to show this template in its collapsed (hidden) state.
- Use {{LGBT|state=expanded}} to show this template in its expanded (fully visible) state.
- Use {{LGBT|state=autocollapse}} to show this template in its collapsed (hidden) state only if there is another template of the same type on the page. (This is usually the default.)

To set individual sections to expand based on the article it is used on, use the following options:
