WikiQueer and Harvey Milk Foundation Launch Online Harvey Milk Day Portal

New initiative documents past Harvey Milk Day events as well as proclamations passed by governments commemorating the annual holiday celebrating the life and legacy of Harvey Milk.

May 22, 2012 – WikiQueer, the free encyclopedia and resource for the LGBT communities, is proud to join the Harvey Milk Foundation in celebrating the Third Annual Harvey Milk Day with the launch of WikiQueer's Harvey Milk Day Portal. The online portal will serve as the official archive of local and official Harvey Milk Foundation events commemorating Harvey Milk Day. The portal's historical contents compliment the Official Harvey Milk Day Website, www.harveymilkday.co, which focuses on events occurring this year. WikiQueer is also integrating with the Harvey Milk Day website to document and share proclamations passed by local, state and regional governments in commemoration of Harvey Milk Day.

Harvey Milk Day is organized by the Harvey Milk Foundation and celebrated globally each year on May 22 in memory of Harvey Milk, a prominent gay civil rights leader assassinated in 1978. The Harvey Milk Foundation celebrates each year with events held around the world. Dozens of organizations and community leaders also join in commemorating the legacy of Harvey on his birthday.

"WikiQueer is honored to be working with the dedicated leadership at the Harvey Milk Foundation to celebrate the legacy of Harvey Milk," said Gregory Varnum, founder of WikiQueer and a member of the Harvey Milk Day steering committee. He added, "The ability to empower organizations and people to share with the world how they honor the profound contributions of pioneers like Harvey is a great example of WikiQueer's potential."

Stuart Milk, nephew of Harvey Milk, and founder and president of the Harvey Milk Foundation said "The Harvey Milk Foundation and I continue to enjoy working collaboratively with Gregory and The Aequalitas Project on developing ways to utilize WikiQueer to share the story of my uncle Harvey and his impact on our world. Harvey’s legacy has the potential to make real societal change and WikiQueer presents a new and exciting opportunity to share his legacy with people online."

This announcement is also a part of WikiQueer's Inauguration, celebrating the launch of WikiQueer and the introduction of many new initiatives with Campus Pride, Canela Foundation, Family Equality Council, the Movement Advancement Project, The Woodhull Sexual Freedom Alliance, and other leading organizations. WikiQueer is a program of The Aequalitas Project that lept into the digital world on February 29, 2012. More information on these initiatives and the WikiQueer program can be found online at: www.WikiQueer.org
